Some gamers will absolutely love this game, but others will find it too frustrating to bother with. but only if you have the patience to try to piece together how its gameplay works and what's going on in the story. Add to that a great presentation and a solid combat system, and there's plenty to like in this game. It's frustrating for me when I can't enjoy a game that everyone else is celebrating, but Hyper Light Drifter absolutely isn't a game for everyone, and if you're the sort of person that absolutely despises hand-holding, this game seems tailor-made for you. I understand the appeal of a minimalist presentation, but if that presentation is so minimal that I don't know what's going on, and can't make informed decisions, then for me that dips over from elegant and mysterious into frustrating, and this combined with the lack of purpose I felt in everything I was doing in the game was highly discouraging for me.īefore wrapping things up here, I should mention that the Nintendo Switch version of the game is the definitive version, upping the framerate from 30FPS to 60, adding new abilities, and a new challenge area. I had never, as far as I could tell, been given any indication that this skill could be expended, and I found myself regretting that I hadn't spent my little orange squares on something else. Wanting to test out this new skill, I gave it a try, only to find out that I had expended it, without any indication how it was supposed to be recharged.

Oh, and the map doesn't bother to give your exact location either, sticking with a general idea.Īt one point, after figuring out that one of the things I collected was a currency, I bought what seemed to be an upgrade for the dash in a shop of sorts, hoping that this would help me to pass an area I encountered earlier. Multiple spots were highlighted on my map, but there wasn't a clear path to get to them, or an indication what those spots are. As you walk around, you'll collect (download?) various items, but the utility of many of them will be a mystery.

Much as with the game's story, Hyper Light Drifter is very hands-off when it comes to explaining its mechanics to the player. However, there are other elements here that I find frustrating. It should be noted that the difficulty level here is a bit high, so less skilled players may not find this game to their liking. The action here is good, making players recharge the gun using their sword, and requiring the player to time the use of their dodge roll and alternate it with attacks based on the enemies they're fighting off. I've seen this game compared to Zelda, but that doesn't quite feel right, since the traversal here is a lot more limited, with the player kept mostly to branching pathways.

Again, this sort of thing won't likely be for everyone, but it definitely succeeds in building the atmosphere the game is going for.Īs for the gameplay itself, players are plopped down on a map and given free reign to explore, fighting off enemies using their sword and a gun, and gradually opening up the map and discovering secrets. This mysterious atmosphere is driven home even more by the game's subdued electronic soundtrack, which seems to take inspiration from the likes of Vangelis's work on films like Blade Runner. Some players may love this sort of storytelling that keeps the cards close to the vest, but others will likely find it frustrating. Well into the game, it's still not entirely clear who the main character is, what he wants, what his place in the world is, and what's going on in that world. That said, the lack of any clear narrative communicated to the player means that players will have to try to piece together exactly what's happening here.

Hyper Light Drifter uses absolutely gorgeous pixel art graphics that are absolutely full of detail and wonderful animation to help fill players in on the game's world and characters - there's no narrative or anything like this to guide players, so all they have to go on are the visuals, but these visuals do provide a lot to clue players in to what's going on. The presentation in this game has to be one of its biggest selling points. Hyper Light Drifter is a Top-Down Action-RPG where players take the role of a mysterious swordsman in a strange sci-fi- heavy world.
